“Dad, what’s ironic mean?”
“Hmm. That’s a kind of hard one to explain. Do you remember when your grandpa passed away a few years ago?”
“Grandpa Bud? Sure. He died from a heart attack. How is that ironic?”
“Well, right after you and your mom moved back in, your grandpa was taking me to A.A. meetings. He was the old guy that everyone listened to when he spoke. It always seemed he had inspiring words to say. He always got people’s attention with a few joke… ‘An alcoholic can always tell another alcoholic. But he can’t tell him much.’ That sort of thing. This particular night he was talking about how the program had saved his life. He was going on and on about how his alcoholism was going to kill him whether he was sober or drunk and the only thing that was keeping him alive was taking the steps. When he was done talking, he got up to get a cup of coffee. On his way back to his seat he collapsed and never woke up again.”
